My Gentle Dog

I need a dog
That can stand
Up for me
When the nights
Get mean and cold,
One that can bite
A harassing stranger
Instead of me
Using my wit.
If I outlive him
I’ll provide
The proper burial
And a headstone:
“Here lies Omar’s dog
who died, poisoned
by the world, who
guarded everything
but his heart, who
was so melancholy
he reminded me of me.”
