Lumpen Literati

swindlers, confidence tricksters, brothel-keepers,
rag-and-bone merchants, beggars, and other flotsam…

– Karl Marx

The refuse of all classes, wrote Marx,
rogues, rascals, and reprobates,

unreliable servants to the revolution,
like those writers and artists lumped together

and jettisoned into the dustbin of history,
the first time as tragedy, the second time as farce.

Let us mince them in a farce, shall we,
and stuff them ass-backwards

into a carcass, a force-meat of poetry,
an embalmed eloquence of rhetoric,

and roast them in an oven, well basted,
lest they gurgitate, yet again.
